The Brazilian Hydrogen Bus Project

An urban public transport fleet of buses in large Brazilian cities that, instead of exhausting black smoke, releases water vapor. Buses totally clean, silent, using hydrogen as fuel, the most abundant chemical element in the planet. This dream became reality on July 1 st, with the presentation of the Brazilian Hydrogen Bus, which will circulate in the Metropolitan Area of Sao Paulo.

The Metropolitan Company of Urban Transport of Sao Paulo (EMTU/ SP), the national coordinator of the project, will be responsible for monitoring and evaluating the performance of the vehicles that will circulate in the 13 bus lines of ABD Metropolitan Bus Corridor (São Mateus - Jabaquara), operated by the concessionaire Metra.

The Brazilian project started 15 years ago when EMTU/ SP, linked to the State Secretary of Metropolitan Transport, and the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) began studies for the use of hydrogen as fuel in urban buses. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) recognized the importance of the project and allocated resources of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to finance it. MME also contributed with financing resources of the Studies and Projects Financer (FINEP).
For the development of the whole project were intended USD 16 million.
